The importance of reading with a Hub child

The Power of Paired Reading: Changing a Child’s Future in South Africa

In the heart of Imizamo Yethu, where children face daily struggles with education due to overcrowded classrooms and limited resources, something as simple as reading together can change a life.

At our aftercare program, we’ve seen firsthand how paired reading—a structured approach where an adult and a child read together—can transform confidence, comprehension, and a child’s love for learning. But more than just improving literacy, paired reading creates a bond, a sense of trust, and a safe space where a child knows they are seen, valued, and capable.

Why Paired Reading Matters

Many children in South Africa do not have access to books at home or a caregiver who can support their reading journey. As a result, literacy levels remain low, limiting their future opportunities. Paired reading bridges this gap by providing children with the focused attention they need to develop their skills and find joy in reading.

The benefits of paired reading are powerful:

  • Boosted Confidence: Children feel encouraged as they read alongside a supportive adult, making mistakes less intimidating and learning more enjoyable.

  • Improved Comprehension: Reading together allows a child to ask questions, discuss stories, and build a deeper understanding of the text.

  • Stronger Academic Performance: Literacy is the foundation of all learning. When children read well, they perform better across all subjects.

  • Emotional Connection: Beyond academics, paired reading fosters trust and mentorship, something every child deserves.

One Hour a Week Can Make a Difference!

This is where you come in! Imagine the impact of giving just one hour a week to read with a child. Over the course of a year, you could be the reason a child moves from struggling with words to confidently reading a book on their own.

We are looking for committed volunteers who can dedicate time to paired reading for the rest of the year. No teaching experience is needed—just patience, encouragement, and a love for helping children succeed.

Will you be that person? We even have our every own reading room - a quiet space for you and the student assigned to you!

Join us in changing the future, one book at a time.

📚 Sign up today to become a paired reading volunteer and help a child in Imizamo Yethu build a brighter future. Contact us at [your contact details] or visit [your website] to learn more.

Together, we can turn the page toward a better future for these children! Please email Sara on hub@learninghub.org.za if you’d consider being a paired reader.
